Music

Jewish music plays an important role at TBE under the direction of Cantor Annie Rose. The Adult Choir, Kol Halev, sings during High Holy Day services, on a monthly basis at Friday night services and at concerts throughout the year. In 2004, the choir toured of Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece where it performed Jewish music in small communities that do not usually have the opportunity to hear performances of this type. This coming spring, Kol Halev looks forward to presenting its fourth concert with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.

The Youth Choir performs in services and concerts at the temple and in the community. Middle School Shir Chadash and High School Shir Chadash, the student choral and instrumental ensembles, perform in services and concerts and periodically hold “Cafe TBE” evenings of music in an informal cafe atmosphere. A late-winter concert by all four choirs is one of the highlights of the year. See below for information on our School choirs.

Youth Choir

Youth Choir is fun, educational, and musically engaging. Our Youth Choir members learn to sing in several languages, become familiar with beautiful Jewish music, and have a great time in rehearsals and performances. Most of our rehearsals take place during Hebrew School hours, for the last 20 minutes of the sessions on Mondays/Wednesdays (children attend rehearsal only on the day in which he/she attends Hebrew School). Additionally, we rehearse one Sunday each month from 3:30-4:30 pm. We perform throughout the year in concerts and services. One of our favorite traditions is the annual Main Street Sing in December, when we gather downtown and sing Chanukah songs. We also travel to another temple or senior citizens’ home during the year to provide concerts of Jewish music.

Middle School Shir Chadash (MSSC): Beautiful Music and great people!

WHAT: Our Middle School Music Groups—Vocal and Instrumental. Great arrangements for both singers and instrumentalists. Something for everyone, challenging and interesting.

WHO: All TBE Middle School singers and instrumentalists, conducted by Cantor Annie Rose, accompanied by Dave Gitterman.

WHEN: We rehearse Sundays before Religious School, from 5:00-6:00 PM. We perform at TBE in concerts, services, and cafes during the year.

High School Shir Chadash (HSSC): More Beautiful Music! More Great People!

WHAT: Our High School Music Groups—Vocal and Instrumental. Great arrangements for both singers and instrumentalists. Something for everyone, challenging and interesting.

WHO: All TBE High School singers and instrumentalists, conducted by Cantor Annie Rose, accompanied by Rosalie Koenig.

WHEN: We rehearse Sundays after Religious School, from 7:30-8:30 PM. We perform at TBE in concerts, services, and cafes during the year.

MORE: We have many extra opportunities for solo work, for both singers and instrumentalists. Want to learn extra music? Perform at TBE or around Ann Arbor doing solos or small ensembles? Want to learn new popular Israeli songs or classic works in the Jewish repertoire? This is the group for you! We also perform jazz, show tunes, and folk music in the American tradition at our cafes. There’s music for everyone in Shir Chadash!
